Paul Emile Brandt was born on July 11, 1883 in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, to an engraver father, descendant of a line of watchmakers. An eclectic jeweller, he produced few pieces compared to some of his contemporaries such as Jean Desprès or Raymond Templier, but always of exceptional quality and many discerning collectors considered him to be Templier's equal in terms of expertise. As a student at the Ecole de la Chaux de Fonds, he met Charles Edouard Jeanneret, with whom he developed a lasting friendship and whom he met again a few years later in Paris, where he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he learned sculpture as well as engraving of hard stones, cameos and so on. continuing his quest for knowledge. The work we are presenting for sale illustrates his talents as a lacquerer as well as his taste for the refined graphics of the leading avant-garde artists of his time.
