Here again the great William Vance is at work. Among his contemporaries, he is the one who best captures the atmosphere. Between the forest shrouded in cold mists and the ford crossed by our protagonists, we are in the full rigour of winter. From Ramiro's mouth escapes a halo of steam, horses and mules valiantly carry their load in the same burden. Their silhouettes release their warm colours with difficulty. Nothing is more narrative than this subtle work of gouaches spiked with white. Without doubt one of the most beautiful illustrations by the author of XIII and Bruce Hawker for one of the rare series that evokes Visigothic Spain.
