Pierre-Antoine PATEL (Paris 1648-1707)
Travellers in a classical landscape with a ruined temple
Canvas.
33 x 41 cm
The composition of our painting is very close to a gouache on vellum by Pierre-Antoine Patel (location
unknown, Natalie Coural, The Patels: Pierre Patel, 1605- 1676, and his sons. Le paysage de ruines à Paris au XVIIe siècle,
Arthena, Paris 2001, p. 286, n° PAP 161, signed and dated 1692). The artist represented on other occasions the motifs of the river-god in a niche and the sculpted nymph.
We thank Mrs. Nathalie Coural for having examined this painting in person. She will include it in her forthcoming supplement
of the work of Pierre-Antoine Patel.
