ART BRUT. ANONYMOUS AMATEUR. Interior or exterior scenes, circa 1940. 9 silver prints enhanced with ecoline inks, colored pencils and gouache, various sizes. We will not underline here the charms and qualities of this set, that was done in Arles in 2019 by the experts in the field, but the instinct of the current owner who noticed and acquired it, a few decades ago, allowing this work not to disappear in a flea market dumpster. Provenance: shoeboxes of the anonymous author, discovered around 1990. Exhibition: Photo-Brut, Collection Bruno Decharme & compagnie, rencontres d'Arles in collaboration with ABCD and American Folk Art Museum of New York, July 2019. Bibliography: Photo-Brut, Collection Bruno Decharme, Flammarion, ABCD, American Folk Art Museum, 2019, pages 27-30 with this critical analysis: "We know nothing of this creator who, in the intimacy of his couple, photographed the woman who we assume is his wife and who seems to bend willingly to his desires, in scenes that are located inside, but also outside. A set of two hundred prints made between 1930 and 1945, enhanced with gouache, has come down to us. The sometimes unexpected touches of colour added to certain physical or clothing details lend even more eroticism to these works, testifying to their author's pleasure in making up, staging and embellishing his beloved model. (B.S.)".
