Fissuring - new works of Qiu Deshu, Leda Fletcher Gallery, Shanghai, described and reproduced on pages 6 and 7 and on the cover
A painter from the Mao era in China, Qiu Deshu received a solid training in traditional artistic techniques, particularly ink. In the 1980s, he noticed a crack in a slate slab and was inspired to begin the Fissuring series, to which this work belongs. This piece combines a very accomplished technique in the mastery of paper and material effects on the one hand, and a Chinese cloudy and mountainous landscape on the other.
