From her marriage to her cousin Charles Gonzaga duke of Nevers (1609-1631) in 1627, Maria Gonzaga had three children. On the premature death of her husband, she became regent of the duchy of Montferrat from 1612 to 1660 and of the duchy of Mantua during the minority of her son Charles from 1637 to 1647.
