La Sylphide. Allegory from the 1st Act of the ballet La Sylphide. Original oil on canvas. On the reverse side mark of the canvas merchant. Signed lower left. On the reverse side of the frame. 100 x 80,5 cm. On the reverse, a reinforcement piece on the upper right; small dent and small missing pieces on the lower left. Provenance: Former collection of Claire Motte (1937 - 1986) first dancer, then prima ballerina (1960) of the Paris Opera. La Sylphide is one of the main romantic ballets, inspired by Charles Nodier's tale, Trilby, which premiered on 12 March 1832 at the Paris Opéra, with music by Jean Schneitzhoeffer (1785 1852) and a libretto by Charles Nourrit (1802 1839). The role of Sylphide was danced by Marie Taglioni, daughter of the Milanese choreographer Filippo Taglioni (1777 1871), in a dress of muslin and crepe petticoats, inaugurating the tutu. On the works of Louis Edouard Rioult kept in French museums (Alès, Amiens, Cherbourg, Compiègne, Montargis, Saint Etienne and Vitré) one will consult the catalogue of the exhibition: 1815 1850, Les années romantiques, p.480 Paris, Grand Palais 1996).
