Spain, around Gabriel YOLY (active between 1515-1539), mid 16th century
Saint Jerome
High relief in carved wood
Height : 64 cm - Width : 44 cm - Depth : 14 cm
(visible accidents and missing parts)
This high relief refers to the northern painters active in Spain and in particular to Gabriel Joly (or Yoli) by comparison with two figures of prophets preserved in the Detroit Institute of Art (Inv.: 54.19 and 45.20), both by its exacerbated naturalism and by its nervousness and the great sensitivity of its sculpture. It was probably originally intended to be covered with polychrome as part of an altarpiece.
