ATTENTION This bronze is based on the statuette of Mars executed by Jean de Bologne for the Elector of Saxony, mentioned in the inventory of his Kunstkammer in 1587, or the one from the former Marczibanyi collection, monogrammed under the right foot with the artist's initials: I.B., which Charles Avery believes to have been executed as early as 1565-70. Other versions followed, made by his workshop and in particular by Antonio Susini (Florence, 1558-1624) who, after working from 1580 to 1600 under the direction of John of Bologna, set up his own family workshop in Florence, taking up and distributing the emblematic compositions of his master as well as his own works. In many respects, our version refers to another Mars statuette in the Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig (Height: 39.3 cm, Inv.: Nr. Bro 106) attributed to the workshop of John of Bologna, and possibly by Antonio Susini. Although the thickness of the patina that covers the version we are presenting hinders its correct reading, the lightness of the cast but above all the accuracy and the nervousness of the chasing allow us to ask ourselves again the question of Antonio Susini's intervention on this unpublished version.
