FLAMANDE School of the 17th century, surrounded by Erasmus Quellin. The continence of Scipio. Oil on canvas. 233×162 cm. The episode takes place in 211 BC, during the Second Punic War. The Roman army conquered Carthage (Spain) and the Roman general, Scipio the African, receives a captive of great beauty from his soldiers. Rather than making her his mistress, he returns her to her father and fiancé. Provenance: collection of the Marquis de Lagoy, by descent.
