INFORMATION: THE DRAWING IS SOLD WITHOUT THE EXHIBITION FRAME /// Jean Auguste Dominique INGRES (Montauban 1780 - Paris 1867). Study of joined hands for the "?Virgin adoring the Host". Black pencil. 23?×?14 cm. Upper corners cut, lower right corner missing (irregular tear) and restored. Our drawing is preparatory for the hands of the "Virgin Adoring the Host", the version commissioned by the artist. Our drawing is a preparation for the hands of the "Virgin adoring the Host", either the version commissioned by the Tsar in 1836 and completed in 1841 (Moscow, Pushkin Museum), or the version commissioned by the State in 1851 and delivered in 1854 (Paris, Musée d'Orsay) (see the catalogue of the Ingres exhibition, under the direction of Pomarède, Guéguan, Prat, Bertin, Paris, 2006, ed.Gallimard/Musée du Louvre, n°139-140, repr.) The technique seems closer to the 1850s. The first version on which Ingres relies, La Vierge au voile bleu, was painted for Pastoret between 1822 and 1827. The clasped hands are in a very similar position, with minor differences. A tracing of the hands of this version, made by Ingres, is kept in the Montauban museum (see G. Vigne, Dessins d'Ingres, Paris, 1995, ed.Gallimard/Réunion des Musées Nationaux, n°245, repr. p.58).
