Subscribers only

L.A.S. "Claude Monet", Giverny par Vernon, Eure 1 March 1915, to Léon WERTH; 4 pages in-8 in pencil to Giverny. Warm letter to the writer and art critic, then at the front. [Léon WERTH (1878-1955) was then fighting in the infantry; Monet had known him thanks to Octave Mirbeau.] "It's a great pleasure for me to have had a word from you. I often think of you, of all that you have to endure and endure. You've also made me happy by responding to little Simone. It is the proof that you have left a good memory in Giverny, and I hope to see you there soon, isn't it, and with my friend MIRBEAU, whom I went to see two days ago. He is not too bad, in short, and these terrible events have given him an activity of spirit and action, which he did not have before. From me, I can tell you that I work a lot. It is going to seem strange to you, and sometimes I feel a little ashamed of it, working while so many others suffer, fight, and die, but it is the only way for me not to think too much about these sad things. It will also prove to you that I am fine. Since I've regained a taste for work, I don't think my eyes hurt anymore."
