Zoomorphic vase The globular belly serves as a base for the body of an old seated dog, whose legs and tail are in relief. Its wrinkled and very expressive head emerges at the base of the flared neck. Its mouth opens up with fangs and it wears a blue knotted scarf around its neck. The iconography suggests an association with the god Xolotl, often represented as an old dog, whose role was to protect and accompany the souls of the deceased into the underworld. The body is decorated with dotted patterns and cream-coloured drawings. Brown terracotta with red-orange engobe with cream and blue decorations. Mayan culture, Mexico 450 - 650 AD H. 17 - l. - Ep. cm Condition: Tail broken and glued back together. Restoration of the four legs. Small restoration on the ears. Cracks on the neck. Provenance : - Collection of M. XXX, acquired in the 60's Expert : Bénédicte HAMARD.
