[SOLEMN ENTRANCE] FESTIVALS GIVEN BY THE TOWN OF STRASBOURG for the King's convalescence on the arrival and during His Majesty's stay in this city. Paris, Aubert (1745). In plano, marbled calf, gilt lace on the covers, smooth spine decorated, gilt coat of arms on the covers, (contemporary binding). Engraved title, equestrian portrait of Louis XV, 20 pages of text entirely engraved in decorated frames and 11 double plates, all invented, designed and directed by J.M. Weis, engraver of the city of Strasbourg. Seriously ill in Metz, Louis XV left for a complete recovery in Strasbourg. The city wanted to compete with the Versailles festivities and the plan was that as many people as possible could attend. The 11 large plates showing the popular festivities, balls, buffets, the arrival of the royal procession, fireworks, water games, wine fountains, are full of charm and abound in prickly details that go as far as drunken scenes. The copy is adorned with the royal coat of arms bearing a golden coat of arms at the corners of the dishes. Hinges well redone, title remounted, scattered freckles, marginal dirt, a restored plate in the margin without missing, (Cohen, 870 - Watanabe n°2092).
