DUBOIS DE MONTPEREUX (Frédéric). Trip to the Caucasus, to the Cherkesses and Abkhases in Colchis, Georgia, Armenia and Crimea. Atlas. Neufchâtel, at the author's home and in Paris, at Gide's, 1843. 5 parts bound in 1 strong volume in folio, half morocco cauldron with corners, small gilt iron "Athenaeum library" in the center of the plates (old binding). Superb atlas illustrating the 2 journeys undertaken since 1831 by Dubois de Montpereux, Swiss naturalist and archaeologist. He obtained all the necessary recommendations to claim the support and assistance of the Russian authorities thanks to the Barons of Meyendorf, ministers of Russia in Berlin and Paris. He went first to Poland, then to Ukraine, and in the spring of 1834 he explored the Crimea, from where a ship of the Russian fleet took him to the Transcaucasian provinces; his work was awarded first prize by the Geographical Society of Paris. A rare atlas, without the volumes of text, which opens with a long lithographic dedication to Tsar Nicholas I, Emperor of all the Russias and which is divided into 5 parts : - 1. ancient and modern Geography series. Title and 21 large maps (1 in facsimile). - 2. picturesque series. Title and 69 plates including 1 double. - 3. architectural series. Title and 37 plates including 3 in colour (1 in facsimile). - 4. Archaeology Series. Title and 40 plates including 14 in colour (2 in facsimile). - 5. geology series. Title and 30 plates and maps of which 18 in colour (6 in facsimile). A total of 197 BELLES PLANCHES (10 in facsimile), including 35 in colour, lithographed by Nicollet in Neufchâtel. Some light freckles, blunt corners. (Brunet II, 848, gives 192 pl.).
