(The Hague), unnamed, 1731.

It is a detailed account of the relationship between Father Girard and his penitent Catherine Cadière, an 18-year-old girl of surprising beauty. This affair "in which the most scandalous hysterical-mystical acts, the most revolting impurities, defy the most austere pen"; it gave rise to one of the most famous erotic novels, "Thérèse philosophe". Epiderminations on the dishes, missing headdresses. Modern ex-libris by Maurice Foucault. (Caillet, 1887) (Gay II, 985-6).
