BAUDELAIRE (Charles). The Flowers of Evil. Paris, Poulet Malassis et de Broise, 1857. In-8 (18.8 x 12.1 cm), mahogany morocco, triple cold filet on covers, ribbed back, inside gilt lace, gilt edges on witnesses, preserved covers, half morocco shirt with stripes of the same colour with pearl grey velvet inside, bordered case (P.L. Martin). Original edition sought after and printed in only 1300 copies, of which 200 mutilated were deprived of the famous 6 pieces. This copy has the 4th state of the cover with the announcement of the book and presents well the 6 sulfurous poems condemned on August 20th, 1857 by the court of the Seine: The Jewels, The Lethe, To the one who is too gay, Lesbos, Damned Women and The Metamorphoses of the Vampire. SUPERB EXEMPLE TO ALL MARGINS, WASHED AND PERFECTLY BOUND IN MAROQUIN BY PIERRE-LUCIEN MARTIN (1913-1983) who was unconditionally one of the greatest bookbinders of his time with Marius Michel, Pierre Legrain and Paul Bonet.
