Nice specimen of aepyornis maximus egg End of the 16th century, South of Madagascar. Note: The aepyornis of Madagascar was of an impressive size. Measuring approximately three meters high, it could weigh about half a ton. This "Elephant" bird, a kind of giant ostrich, disappeared during the 17th century due to hunting by man. It is larger than any known dinosaur egg and could contain seven ostrich eggs, 180 hen eggs or more than 12,000 hummingbird eggs. Bibliography: See Lucien M.A. H: 33.5 cm
