The TR2, which was unveiled at the 1953 Geneva Car Show was the first representative of a family of successful models manufactured using mechanical components of Standard-Triumph origin. The success of the TR2 and TR3, which combined the attractions of practicality, high-performance and low price, was ensured by sporty drivers for whom comfort accessories were only of secondary importance. In 1961, a general crisis led to a drop in sales, but in the meantime, Triumph had asked the Italian designer Michelotti to design a new version of the TR sport, retaining the TR3’s well-tried mechanical base. Michelotti produced a modern, elegant and more comfortable body, with wind-up windows, an easily erected hood with folding hoops, rack and pinion steering etc. Sales picked up, particularly across the Atlantic where the lack of an increase in performance did not have any negative effect. The TR4 appeared on the British market in the spring of 1962, but the vast majority of cars were exported to the United States.
The Triumph TR4 that we present in these pages was first registered in the United States in 1964, like most TR4s. It was imported in France only recently by its owner, a collector, gentleman driver and British cars enthusiasts. Before being imported, the car was fully restored by its American owner, resident in Long Beach, Washington, at the North of the West Coast. When the car arrived in France, its owner entrusted it to the specialist Classic Garage in near Paris, who will make the first laps at the wheel to ensure the car is in good working order.
The restoration has been nicely done and the mechanics is in perfect working order. At the beginning of 2020, its current owner decided to make his TR4 available in regularity category on the Tour Auto Optic 2000. He is himsel
