The duchess of Gontaut-Biron (1773-1862) was lady-in-waiting to the duchess of Berry and governess of the Children of France during the Restoration. Her eldest daughter became Duchess of Rohan-Chabot, her youngest daughter Countess of Bourbon-Busset.
Henri-Joseph Hesse, a pupil of David and Isabey, exhibited regularly at the Salon and was much appreciated by the Duchess of Berry.
He made similar portraits for the Rohan-Chabot and Bourbon.
