Mater dolorosa - École du Nord Oil on canvas from the end of the XVIIth - beginning of the XVIIIth century, having suffered the effects of time as well as an old scratch in the lower left corner. Chassis from the XVIIIth century Frame from the XIXth century Good overall condition Mater dolorosa - École du Nord, from the end of the XVIIth - beginning of the XVIIIth century. At first glance, the painting looks very dark. Then the eye becomes accustomed to the palette of colours of great sobriety, all in light and shadow. The more patient the observer, the more he penetrates the serenity imbued with sadness of the Virgin's face. Mary is flawless, but her moist eyes betray all her suffering. Does she look at the extended body of Christ descended from the cross? Her arms folded in a careful and maternal gesture underline her feminine and absolutely benevolent nature. The exceptional character of the Virgin Mary, as is often the case in religious art, is accentuated in this painting by long fingers and the presence of a sixth finger on one of the hands to remind us that the mother of Christ possesses a sixth sense, that of "spiritual sight": the deep understanding of things, the revelation of their hidden meaning and clairvoyance. Oil on canvas from the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th century, having suffered the effects of time and an old scratch in the lower left corner. 18th century frame. 19th century frame. Good overall condition Painting size: 65 x 49.5 cm Frame size: 82 x 67 cm
