Domenicus Van WIJNEN a.k.a. ASCANIUS (Amsterdam, 1661 - after 1690) Bohemian camps Canvas. Ancient restorations. 57,5 x 72 cm Van Wijnen was present in the Eternal City between 1680 and 1690. He was inducted into the Bentvueghels, the brotherhood of Dutch artists in Rome, under the name 'Askaan' or 'Ascanius'. Author of a very small number of fantastic scenes of magic, necromancy, supernatural allegories illuminated from the inside (National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, Pavlovsk Castle in St Petersburg...); here he paints a bambochade, i.e. a scene of daily life in an Italian exterior where ruins and recent houses mingle. The colour range and gestures of the characters here are quite similar to the painting by van Wijnen kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Carcassonne. The attribution to Van Wijnen was confirmed by Professor Jan Willem Salomonson, on photograph, by email to the owner on 5 March 2015.
