This painting belongs to a series of panels of the same format, with inscriptions on a dark background in identical cartouches at the bottom, on the theme of the life of Christ and Salvation: the Nativity - Christ on the Cross (Lempertz sale, 14 November 2015, no. 01427, The Annunciation - Pentecost, New York sale, Sotheby's, 5 February 2019, no. 1006).
Four paintings in this series are mentioned as being by Jacob de Backer in the inventory of the collections of Archduke Ernest of Austria, governor of the Netherlands in 1593 and 1595: Original Sin, the Annunciation, Christ on the Cross and Our Resurrection. These did not reappear until 1958 at the Schaeffer Gallery in New York.
