BLOCH Ernst (1885-1977) philosophe allemand

TAPUSCRIT signed "Ernst Bloch" with autograph additions and corrections, Jüdische Jugendbewegung, [1924], with L.A.S. d'envoi, Köln (Cologne) 19 August 1924, to his secretary Erna KLUG in Ludwigshafen; 7 pages in-fol.., and 2.5 pages oblong in-12 with address (Postkarte); in German. A detailed examination of the Jewish youth movement in Germany in the early 1920s. In his card to Erna Klug, Bloch hopes that their joint work will be successful ("Hoffentlich wird unsere gemeinsame Arbeit in diesem Falle wirklich Erfolg haben"), and he encourages her in her learning of Hebrew . The typescript bears in mind this autograph submission: "Erna Klug, meiner Sekretärin zum Danke für geleistete Hilfe Ernst Bloch". On the whole, Bloch is dissatisfied with the "Hachsharah", the preparation of young Jews for a life as "Chaluzim", pioneers, in Palestine. He speaks of a great crisis decision ("grossen krisenhaften Entscheidung") of Zionism towards the new generation of Jewish settlers. He criticizes the identification of Jewish youth groups with comparable German movements. The Germans believed that they were wrenching their youth from the crisis of Europe and the misery of the masses by stirring up impulses and awakening once again the hidden Werther, that tragic scarecrow ("den verborgenen Werther, den tragischen Schwärmer"), through song, dance, hiking, revealing the beauty of the homeland, etc. The Jewish youth was to be given the opportunity to express themselves in a new way. By plunging the German people into the fountains of their youth, they thought they were creating a new man, a new Eros; in a petty-bourgeois spirit, they believed - by adapting the large community to their own small image - that they could renew society in communities, and finally they understood that they had only created a new communal egoism instead of individual egoism.
