Signed autograph letter from Baudelaire to the director of the newspaper Le Pays [Bernard-Adolphe Granier de Cassagnac]. "[...] I have no intention of taking it away from you. But I have an absolute need for it, because in two or three days, I am leaving for Brussels, this work must be the object of a public reading. I do not have a copy of it. It's called Peintres de Moeurs - M. Constantin G. It's a set of printing cupboards stuck on blue vellum".
Charles Baudelaire had a major influence on Constantin Guys, whom he presents as the painter of modern life. Claude Pichois specifies that this public reading was only a pretext, Baudelaire was asking for his manuscript to give it elsewhere, it will indeed be published a few days after this letter in the Figaro under the title "The Painter of Modern Life".
