L.A.S. "Claude Debussy", December 13, 1899, to the publisher Georges HARTMANN ; 2 pages in-12 on grey paper.
Beautiful letter on Sirens, the third piece of the Nocturnes (of which Hartmann is the dedicatee).
"Have you received the Sirens? I would have liked to bring them to you myself, but I was sick, Lilly too, all that very cheerful in the black way. I forgot to ask you to tell the copyist that, in the separate parts, he has to indicate the nuances and movements indicated at the top of the pages of the score (the copyist makes a lot of mistakes, there are however enough of mine!...) ". He works at La Saulaie "with, it seems, the collaboration of the Good Lord"... And he adds in postscript these three sad verses:
"Yesterday as today
Tomorrow as tonight
I am not richer".
Correspondence 1899-113.
