Theodore de BRUYN (1726-1804) View of Donington Park. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1798 down the centre. Sight size : 94 x 65 cm. Frame: 109 x 81 cm A landscape painter, he was a pupil of Nicolas Van Den Bergh in Antwerp, he later settled in London where he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1773 to 1803. This large landscape of the English countryside represents a view of Donington Park in Leicestershire. Theodore de Bruyn seems to have been the painter of the great estates of the English countryside. The works that we found of him essentially take up this theme: "View of Luxborough Hall, view of Mansion Painshill, Benjamin Bond Hopkin's estate, view of Chatsworth House". Following in the footsteps of Georges Lambert (1700-1765) and following the example of Richard Wilson 1713-1782, Theodore de Bruyn was one of the singers of the English countryside whose atmosphere he was able to capture perfectly. This painting was probably exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1799 under number 536.
