The genesis of the most famous sports car was long and difficult, but it was worth it. Indeed, the idea of an evolution to the 356 was born in the mind of Ferry Porsche as early as the mid-1950s. In 1957, he entrusted the style to Albretch Goertz, which resulted in the Type 965 model. However, this study disappointed Ferry, who had a 356 cut in half, then entrusted the first part to Goertz and the second part to the factory team. It was the latter that was to get the boss's favours. The Type T7 appears in 1959 and proves to be particularly close to what will become the 911, only the rear end will be revised under Butzi's pencil. In 1961, the drawing is stopped, the car still needs to be tuned. This is why about ten prototypes are built, until the official presentation at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. The production version adopts a 2.0-litre, six-cylinder, flat six engine developing 130 horsepower, which, as on the 356, is rear overhung and air-cooled. In 1964, only 82 Type 901s were produced. The real production started in 1965, inaugurating the famous Type 911, and over time it became a legend.
