The backlit ironing machine, kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is the first version of a series of three, in a somewhat tragic atmosphere a silhouette at work stands out against the whiteness of the linen. This drawing is a study for this figure, tiled to be transferred, of the same size as in the painting. The latter, moreover, retains traces of tiles corresponding to those of this study.
