Sketches for the history of Saint-Saturnin, decoration studies for the church of Champigny-sur-Marne 1876
Two oil studies in the form of spandrels, signed at the bottom, on a gold background canvas. 45.5 x 32.5 cm
Project for the Saint-Saturnin church in Champigny-sur-Marne. Each composition gave rise to two preparatory drawings under the titles "Faits de la vie de Saint-Saturnin" and "Ensevelissement de Saint-Saturnin", kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon and referenced under the numbers: D3255/ D3251 / D3254 / D3252.
It provides a decor inspired by 17th century religious painting by skillfully bending to the constraints imposed by architecture. These decorations do not seem to have been chosen for the final decoration of the building.
