CHARTER] France, [Anjou], 19th century, falsification of a 12th century charter In Latin, vellum, brown ink, chancellery script, text on 7 lines with parchment tail (seal preserved but broken), inscriptions on the back "G. de meduana de. c. z. xxx. [...]" and handwritten inscription after the pen. Dimensions: 135 x 71 mm. This charter, forged in the 19th century, originally from 1190 (dated), concerns Geoffroy III of Mayenne, Lord of Mayenne. Transcription: "Notu[m] sit omnib[u]s xpi[Christi] fidelib[u]s q[uo]d ego Gaufrid[us] de Meduana constitui me debitore[m] de centu[m] z trigta marcis arg[enti] k[arissi]mis meis b[er]nardo de f[er]itate f[ran]cisco de Virmucio W[illelm]o d[i]c[t]o de q[u]atuorbarbis z[et] gaufrido de plencca p[er] ansoldu[m] bochonu[m] z[et] ej[us] socios jan[uenses] civ[es] mutuatis. Et volo atq et [con]cedo q[uo]d deficientib[u]s in d[i]c[t]a solu[ti]o[n] e psatis k[arissi]mis meis. c. z. xxx. Marcas sup[r]ad[i]c[t]as ego ip[s]e reddere d[i]c[t]is civib[us] tenear. At the beginning of 1842, a large number of titles were made and sold to those who were promised to have their coat of arms displayed in the "Salle des Crusades" in Versailles. This was the mass production of "crusade charters" by two associates, Eugène-Henri Cour tois, a man of business, and Paul Letellier, a copyist and genealogist. Courtois, a true swindler, went bankrupt, went to prison and was banished from the circles he had swindled. Letellier for his part bought back part of the Hozier collection, and continued his forgery: several chartriers contain pieces from his pharmacy.
