The last decade of the XVIIth century saw a notable transformation in cabinet making. The austere forms are adorned with marquetry giving them a lush appearance, giving rise to "ceremonial" furniture.
The motifs are directly inspired by the register of the ornamentalist Jean Bérain (1640 - 1711). At that time, he produced many decorations which will nourish the decorative arts in ceramics, tapestry and, here, furniture.
