ERTÉ - Romain de Tirtoff (1892-1990) A suite of 30 gouaches on paper, projects of costumes and sets for the revues of the Tabarin cabaret. Romain de TIRTOFF will sign under the pseudonym ERTE so as not to disgrace the aristocratic name of his Russian family. He is the creator of costumes and decors which will become emblems of the Art Deco style. His originality lies in introducing the influence of Persian miniature and Russian symbolism. Erté's artistic inspirations are the artists Léon Bakst and Alexandre Benois, initiators of the scenography of the Ballets Russes in Paris. Trained by the painter Répine in Saint Petersburg, who emigrated to Paris in 1912, he designed clothes for Paul Poiret and became a contributor to the most prestigious fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, for which he produced 250 covers (as well as for Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Women's home journal). He has also designed projects for the Paris Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the London Opera, as well as for the Goldwyn Mayer Subway studios in Hollywood. This exceptional set of drawings executed for the TABARIN ball shows the variety of his plastic imagination. who fascinated all eras and more recently Roland Barthes and Andy Warhol. The TABARIN ball, created on the hill of Montmartre at 36, rue Victor-Massé, in a beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, quickly became fashionable with its costume balls, shows and revues, especially the French Cancans, adapted from the nearby Moulin Rouge.
