19th century GERMAN school Portrait of Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-c.1555/1561) Large rectangular plate in curved copper painted with polychrome enamels. Reddish counter-enamel. Caption in the upper part, framing the face, gold letters: IMAGO . HINRI . SVZATIAN . AB / IPSO . AVTOre AD . VIVAM / EFFIGIO DOLINATA / ANNO MDXXXV Height. 24.8 Width. 18.3 cm. (accidents). Beautiful antique frame with antique label. Provenance: descendant of Jean Marie-Pie Michel Claret (1805-1886), architect-decorator of Napoleon III and protégé of Baron James de Rothschild. Portrait of Heinrich Aldegrever, large rectangular plate in curved copper with polychrome enamels. German school of the 19th century. Heinrich Aldegrever (Paderbon 1502 - Soest 1558) painter, engraver, goldsmith, draughtsman belongs to the "little German masters of the Renaissance" whose monogram AG is in homage to that of Dürer AD. His enamelled portrait at the age of thirty-five is based on his engraved self-portrait of 1537, of which a print (19.9 x 12.8 cm.) is kept in the Louvre museum, following its donation in 1935 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild (L 21LR./177. Folio 37). One finds the same inscription at the bottom of the engraving, in a cartouche: "IMAGO HENRICI ALDEGREVERS SVZATIEN / AB IPSO AVTORE AD VIVAM EFFIGIE DELINA / ANNO AETATIS SVE XXXV".
