Large CASTLE, known as CASSONE, of the CASTLE of CHENONCEAU in wood with a curved shape on the façade with polychrome and gold decoration of three rectangular cartouches inscribed with a vase on a pedestal. The flap is covered with Cordoba leather with floral and fruit scroll motifs. Wrought iron handles on the sides. Italy, 16th century. Antique inventory label on the left side. The sides are decorated with medallions in laurel torus with coat of arms. Height. 55 Long. 166 Deep. 47 cm. (accidents, and lack of leather). Provenance: - former collection of the castle of Chenonceau, where this chest was presented in the green cabinet of Catherine de Medici, under a tapestry of du Cerceau, as attested by an old postcard, - offered by the Menier family to Eugénie Mainguy (1902-1982), guide at the castle until 1945 and daughter of the stewards; Senator Gaston Menier was her wedding witness in 1927, - by descent, Touraine. Large so-called cassone chest from the castle of Chenonceau, Italian work of the 16th century.
