J. B. Gibert (1711-1771), member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, secretary and keeper of the archives of the peerage from 1766 to 1772, wrote this work to combat the pretensions of the House of Rohan to a higher rank than other peers in France.
Provenance: back to the weapon parts of the Rohan (macles), alternating with crowned Lorraine crosses. Label ex-libris Bibliothèque du Comte F. de Rohan-Chabot and dry seal Rohan-Chabot (monogrammed RC crowned) on cover page. (Saffroy I, 15194).
