SALAMPASU MASK, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
Wood, fibre, kaolin
H. 32 cm
Mask of great aesthetic strength, used in ceremonies accompanying circumcisions and in celebrations designed to strengthen the well-being and balance of the community. The face is entirely covered with kaolin. The square mouth opens onto long spiked teeth. The strongly rounded forehead surmounts the rectangular eyes. The beard of fibres encircles the lower part of the face. Beautiful play of volumes.
