BERTHE MORISOT
With Mary Cassatt and Marie de Bracquemond, Berthe Morisot was one of the women who carved themselves a place in the Impressionist movement. A friend and model of Edouard Manet, she married his brother, Eugène, who supported her in her early career when she met with criticism and ridicule.
The Ecole des Beaux-Arts was still closed to women at the time, so she learned to draw by copying works at the Louvre and took lessons from Corot. Although she destroyed some of her early works, we know that she started out painting landscapes and was in contact with the leading names in the art world (including Degas, Cros and Manet), taking an active part with them in establishing the Impressionist movement. Her favourite subjects as a mature artist were portraits and mothers with children; By then Morisot was internationally recognised, although this was a period of grief and illness for her. She died in 1895.
