Medallion of 4.5 solid. Trier (376-378). Gold. 20,40 g. 39 mm. 2nd dispensary. A/ D N VALEN-S P F AVG Tiara bust, draped and armoured with Valens on the right, wearing a pearled and gemmed tiara. R/ GLORIA RO-MANORVM/ --// TROBS Rome helmeted and draped sitting facing a throne, holding a globe in the right hand and a sceptre in the left. Cohen, VIII, p. 102, n° 5 (1.000f. gold) - RIC IX, p.21, n° 38a - Gnecchi, I, p. 36, n° 5, pl. 14, n° 15 (Münich) - Froehner p. 330. Portrait of all beauty. Very beautiful copy of this extremely rare coin. Provenance: This multiple was acquired on December 18, 1947 (448,500 francs) from Ratto. It was examined in 1966 by Émile Bourgey and estimated (65,000 FF). For Valens, the four specimens currently listed show two varieties of bust: simple pearl tiara and the composite, pearl and gemstone tiara (our type). For the reverse, we have two different workshop marks: TROBS (our type) and TROBT. The copy from the Caruso collection (sale Canessa, 1923, n°598) of the Capitoline Museum in Rome is in the same right corner as our medallion.
