The work that we present to you today is entitled «L'Anse des Pilotes, le Havre, 1934» and represents a view of a port area. This is an essential theme in Marquet's work. Painter of modern landscapes of the 20th century, he illustrates here the modernity of this Normandy port with cranes, lampposts... Influenced by the fauve movement, we find in his compositions bright colors inherited from this artistic movement. In addition to the composition the use of clear, simplified lines and a remarkable perspective.
ALBERT MARQUET
Coming from a modest family, Albert Marquet is a French painter born in 1875 in Bordeaux. He was attracted to art from a very young age, and entered the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1892. He met Henri Matisse there, who took him under his wing. Shortly afterwards, the two artists returned to the Beaux-Arts de Paris and attended Gustave Moreau's studio. Moreau encouraged him to go to museums to learn how to observe and copy the old masters. In this establishment, he met the artists Charles Camoin and Henri Manguin who remained his companions throughout his life. His classical training did not exclude his keen interest in the Impressionists. Their way of representing and studying landscapes and light fascinated and inspired him deeply. Throughout his career, the study of landscapes remains his favorite subject, however, he distances himself from their artistic techniques and appropriates himself the genre.
