ARMAND GUILLAUMIN
Landscape painter, Armand Guillaumin has been particularly attached to the Paris region, ‘la Creuse' and ‘L'Esterel'. Born in 1841 in Paris into a working-class family from Moulins, he worked from the age of 16 for his uncle for the Compagnie des chemins de fer d'Orléans, while studying drawing. He then attended the Swiss Academy, where he met Cézanne and Pissarro. The artist took part in the ‘Salon des Refusés' in 1863, and in most of the ‘expositions Impressionnistes' between 1874 and 1886.
Inspired by the great masters of impressionism, he paints on the motif and especially open-air landscapes, he paints in an energetic style, in large strokes. From the 1890s onwards, his painting became more subjective and one can observe, in his work, an increasingly expressive use of color, with an atypical chromatic process, seeming to herald Fauvism. From 1892 onwards, he divided himself more precisely between Creuse and Agay. Our painting, located in Agay, near St Raphaël in the Var, can be dated from the very first years of the 20th century.
