(circa 1500). - The BOOK INTITUATES THE ART OF WELL DIEING with The Consolation of the Right Angle (angel) at the hour of death against the Dyable denfer. Ibid, id, n.d. (circa 1500). 2 books in one volume in-8 format, half green basane, long title on the spine (19th century binding). Bechtel, A-283 / Brother, II-264 /// (24f.). A-D6 / (16f.). aa-bb6-cc4. Rare Gothic impressions, on two columns, which seem to have escaped the bibliographers. The bookshop Robert (or Robinet) Mace officiated in Caen from 1498 until his death in 1506. He was appointed in 1499 Librairie de l'Université to replace Michel Estienne and was the father of a line of booksellers including Richard, Girard and Robert II Mace. He published about fifty volumes which are rare today. Leaf A1 of the first volume bears the title in red and black and the curious mark of Robert Mace. On the back is a large wood panel depicting the master and the pupil. On the last page the colophon indicates Cy fine the traicte of the art of living well and dying well L 'Ars moriendi (art of dying well) has been translated and imitated in several languages without the author really being known. It was probably inspired by a treatise by Gerson. It was later joined by the Ars bene vivendi (art of living well), which deals with the religious life of the Christian, the rites, commandments, prayers and sacraments he must follow. Our edition is not cited by bibliographers. Only Bechtel mentions an edition printed in Rouen for Robert Mace that he dates from 1507, of which the National Library has an incomplete copy. The second volume also contains the title on the first leaf with the printer's mark, the same wood on the reverse and the colophon on the last leaf. Rubbed binding, broken corners, first leaf restored, traces of old angular dampening.
