Written by the Parisian lawyer Jean Coignet, this work presents the "chante pleure", a tone of soft sadness, of deep melancholy, intended to accompany and serve as a sound climate for lament songs. The texts published here are intended to create the spiritual basis for the repentance necessary for the development of such music. The work is divided into four parts: the first part provides the textual and religious support for the notion of repentance, followed by three excerpts from liturgical texts
