Signed autograph manuscript in which Gary relates his interview with Robert Kennedy, which took place one month before the Senator's assassination.
In May 1968, Robert Kennedy, then in the middle of the California primary campaign, had a conversation with Romain Gary: "About a fortnight ago - I'm not sure of the exact date, but Bobby Kennedy had just arrived in Los Angeles for his election campaign, after his victory in Oregon, and was resting incognito at the home of the director Frankenheimer - I went to Malibu Beach to discuss with the Senator, at his invitation, the political situation in France and the black problem in the United States. "
Romain Gary asked Kennedy about the precautions he is taking in the face of a possible attack. Kennedy replied: "There is no way to protect a candidate during the election campaign. You have to give yourself to the crowd and from there on...you have to rely on luck. "The tragic
irony is that the U.S. Senator was assassinated on June 5, 1968, just one month after this interview.
Gary's text was published in Le Figaro on June 6, 1968, the day after Kennedy's assassination, under the headline, "A few days ago, Bobby said to me, 'I know there will be an attack sooner or later'". "
Important and poignant document.
