Barjavel attended the performance of Mauriac's play,
Passage du Malin, at the Théâtre de la Madeleine, and here he writes a virulent review of it: "Passage du Malin presents us with a complete sampling of these strange beings [...]. The spectator, almost always embarrassed and often dismayed, watches in amazement as these ghosts are agitated, tearing, sniffing, sobbing, moaning with pleasure and abomination [...]. This Passage of the Evil One will undoubtedly be only a furtive stroll, Western civilization will continue nonetheless, spreading around it other perfumes than that dormitory smell that emanates from the stage of the Madeleine theatre and suffocates the moderately balanced spectator. "
The critical reception of Mauriac's drama is particularly bad and the play is a bitter failure.
Traces of folds, a few stains.
