The book opens with a long and praiseworthy dedication of 18 pages "To Honoré Daumier", dated "Neuilly, June 1851".
Champfleury will celebrate Daumier at length in his Histoire de la caricature moderne (1865)]. "Finally, my dear Champ Fleuri, I reply to you and ask you not to take for impoliteness my extreme laziness in writing [...]
Excuse me and receive my thanks for your dedication which I accept wholeheartedly and which flatters me greatly, although it honors me too modestly aside. It is useless for you to bother to come since you are in a hurry, we will talk about this when we meet"....
