These creatures have a mythical appearance. Their wings spread out in the infinity of the sky convey a sense of freedom and lightness, making birds a real trademark of his style and symbolising «the metamorphosis of the palette with inspired wings» as Braque put it. The extremely simplified form of these birds, without eyes, beaks or feathers, arose from his assimilation of archaic art via the Etruscan pottery he admired. The chromatic range is somewhat dark and cool, highlighting dense compositions imbued with calm and silence. These subtleties contribute to the feeling of flight and evanescence To celebrate his 80th birthday, Georges Braque and the poet Saint-John Perse decided to create with the editors of Au Vents d’Arles publishing house an album containing 12 etchings along with the poem L’ordre des Oiseaux. The artwork we are presenting today was chosen by Braque to be reproduced in the collection. It is interesting to point out that the major artwork L’oiseau noir et l’oiseau blanc is also part of this selection of 12 artworks. L’ordre des Oi AC2021
