Marcel Damboise performed this bust when he was mobilized and assigned to the camouflage section, where many artists were working. During this period, he also painted the portrait of the actor Jean-Louis Barrault (see cat. no. 96). A painter and sculptor, Albert Leclerc (1906-1974) trained at the School of Fine Arts in the studios of Jules Coutan (1848-1939), Paul Landowski (1875-1961) and Charles Despiau (1874-1946). He exhibited in various Salons and won several prizes, such as the Vital-Cornu prize in 1935, the Algerian prize in 1947 and the grand prize for sculpture at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1971. Decorated Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1974, he received numerous public commissions, such as L'Ange for the church of Barentin in Seine-Maritime, or L'Athlète au repos for the Pierre Coubertin stadium in Paris.
