Poemata. Quarta editio. Auctior & emendatior. Amsterdam, Elzevier, 1663. Petit in-12, 4 ff.n.ch., 325 pp. and 1 f.n.ch.: long grain olive green morocco, dishes with a large gilt decoration consisting of a panel divided into four parts arranged around an oval medallion left in reserve, decorated spine, inner wheel, gilt edges (Purgold). First Elzevirian edition of the poetic works of Gilles Ménage (1613-1692), containing his Latin, Greek and French poems: a typographical jewel (Willems, no. 1311 - Tchemerzine IV, p. 671: "Some copies also contain, at the end, Mazarin's eulogy in three pages"; they are not included here). Exquisite binding with Purgold's fanfare, with great virtuosity of execution. Nicknamed the prince of bookbinders, Jean-Georges Purgold was one of the major bookbinders of the 19th century alongside René Simier and Joseph Thouvenin. An apprentice at Bozerian, he had founded his own workshop after his master's retirement in 1810. From the Henri Beraldi library, with ex-libris (not in the catalogue). Small stains and freckles on a few leaves.
