Sir Joshua Reynolds enjoys great popularity for his portraits of children of the English aristocracy. Emphasizing their innocence and natural grace, he created works on the borderline between the personified portrait and the allegory of youth. His Age of Innocence (1788) is his most famous study of the figure of a child. When he died in 1792, the philosopher Edmund Burke wrote of the artist: "Sir Joshua Reynolds was in many ways one of the most memorable men of his time. He was the first Englishman to add the praise of the Elegant Arts to the other
Glories of his country. In taste, in grace, in ease, in happy invention, and in richness and harmony of colour, he was the equal of the great masters of the renowned Ages".
